Introduction

Bowen University is one of the oldest private universities in Nigeria. It was established in 2001 by the Nigerian Baptist Convention (NBC) and is the first Baptist university in Africa.

 

History and Establishment

History: Its history can be traced back to 1854, when the family of Rev. Thomas Jefferson Bowen founded a school in Ijaiye Orile, Oyo State, Nigeria. In 1938, the Nigerian Baptist Convention first conceived the idea of ​​establishing a Baptist university. In 1956, the proposal was put forward and in 1957 it was approved by a joint meeting of the Nigerian Baptist Mission and the Executive Committee of the Nigerian Baptist Convention. On July 17, 2001, the Federal Government of Nigeria approved the establishment of Bowen University, which was subsequently granted an operating license by the National Universities Commission (NUC). On November 4, 2002, Bowen University officially started its academic activities.
