School profile: The University of Dar es Salaam is the largest public comprehensive university in Tanzania.

Basic profile

Established on October 25, 1961, it was originally an affiliated college of the University of London and became an independent university in 1970.

Geographic location: Located in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, the main campus is on Mount Upakalaka in the north of the city.

Historical evolution

On October 25, 1961, the University College of Dar es Salaam was established as an affiliated college of the University of London, and the School of Law was the first department.

On June 29, 1963, it formed the University of East Africa with Makerere University College in Uganda.

In 1970, the University of East Africa was split and the University of Dar es Salaam became independent.

In 1991, the Department of Medicine was upgraded to the Faculty of Health Sciences of Muhibili University, and the University College of Land and Architecture Studies was upgraded to Ardi University.

In 2005, Dar es Salaam Teachers College became its Faculty of Education.
