Basic information

Established on August 11, 1948.

Nature of institution: Public university.

Geographic location: Located in the Legon district of Accra, the capital of Ghana, the campus is about 12 kilometers away from the city center and has convenient transportation.

School logo: The main colors of the school emblem are indigo and camel. There are three upright "aya" (ferns in Akan) in the upper part of the blue shield, and "dwen in men to aso" in the middle of the lower part, all of which are presented in gold relief, symbolizing integrity, strength and other connotations.

School philosophy: Develop world-class human resources and capabilities, and adapt to the country's development needs and face global challenges through high-quality education, learning, research and knowledge dissemination.

Historical evolution: In 1948, the University of Ghana was established as the "Gold Coast College", which was then an affiliate of University College London. After Ghana's independence in 1957, the college was renamed the University College of Ghana. In 1961, the school obtained full university status and was officially renamed the University of Ghana.

Area and Layout: The campus covers a large area and is basically developed along the north-south and east-west axes. The style combines colonial architectural features with modern style.

Landmark Building: The school library (THE BALME LIBRARY) is located in the north of the intersection of the north-south and east-west axes. It is the landmark building of the University of Ghana and the largest public library in Ghana.
