Basic Information
Established in 1985 as a Protestant Theological Seminary (Institut Supérieur de Théologie Protestante), and approved by the government to become a university in 1991.
School Location: Goma, North Kivu Province, eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo.

History
The school was sponsored by six Protestant denominations, including two Baptists, two Pentecostals, one Anglican and one Methodist. It was established in 1985 as a Protestant Theological Seminary and officially became the Free University of the Great Lakes Countries on August 16, 1991, in accordance with Order No. ESU/CAB MIN/0188/91. Its academic accreditation was consolidated by Order ES URS/CAB MIN/0108/92 of February 5, 1992, and further recognized by Ministerial Order ESURES/CAB MIN/A5/0022/96 of January 31, 1996. Its legal status was granted by Prime Ministerial Order of May 27, 1996, and further confirmed by Presidential Order of June 12, 2006. In 2001, campuses were established in Bukavu (South Kivu) and Butembo (North Kivu).

Student size: In 2015, the number of students exceeded 4,000.
Academic Resources: It is a member of the Association of Universities of Francophone Countries, and has cooperation and exchanges with other academic institutions in the region and abroad, providing a broader academic platform for students and teachers.
Teaching facilities: There are certain teaching facilities and venues in the campuses of Goma, Bukavu and Butembo. For example, the Moise campus in Goma has a seminary, student dormitories and professor residences, and the Solomon campus has law schools, economic schools, educational sciences and other departments, as well as male dormitories and visiting professor residences.

Departments: There are seminaries, law schools, schools of economic sciences and management, schools of health and community development, schools of psychology and educational sciences, and schools of science and applied technology.
Key disciplines: Theology is its traditional advantage discipline. Based on its Christian background, it has a deep accumulation in theological research and talent training; disciplines such as law, economics, and medicine also have a certain influence in the local area, and have cultivated a large number of professional talents for the society.

Campus distribution: There are three campuses in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo, two campuses in Moise and Solomon in Goma, multiple colleges in Bukavu campus, and four colleges in Butembo campus with two project sites under construction.
