The University of Kikwit was originally a branch of the University of Kinshasa, named the Kikwit University Center (CUK). On September 27, 2010, according to Ministerial Decree No. 157/MINE SU/CAB MIN/E BK/PK/2010, the Kikwit University Center became an independent University of Kikwit.
