On October 1, 2004, Kindu University was originally established as Kindu University Center, a branch of the University of Lubumbashi. On September 27, 2010, in accordance with Ministerial Order No. 157/MINE SU/CAB MIN/E BK/PK/2010, Kindu University Center became an independent Kindu University.
