The University of Manchester (abbreviated as Manchester University) is located in Manchester, the second most prosperous city in the UK. It is a public research-oriented comprehensive university. The University of Manchester is a "red brick university" in the UK, a founding member of the Russell Group, a member of the University Research Association, and a member of the International University Climate Alliance. Its academic research level ranks among the top ten in the UK in the Research Excellence Framework (REF). The University of Manchester in the UK was founded in 1824. The predecessor of the school was Owens College, which was founded in 1851. It was upgraded to Victoria Manchester University in 1880 and was officially named the University of Manchester in 1903. The University of Manchester ranks 32nd in the 2024 QS World University Rankings. Alliance Manchester Business School is a secondary college under the University of Manchester and has been accredited by the three major business school academic accreditation agencies EQUIS, AACSB, and AMBA.
