The University of Birmingham is located in Birmingham, England. It is the first civic university in England, a founding member of the Universitas 21 global research university network, a member of the Russell Group, the M5 University Alliance, the Global University Alliance, and the China-UK University Engineering Education and Research Alliance. It is recognized by REF as one of the top 15 research universities in the UK.
The history of the university can be traced back to Mr. John Tomlinson's medical education seminar in 1767-1768. Its predecessor was Mason College. Queen's College was established in 1843 and Mason College was established in 1880. In the later development, the two colleges merged and some departments became the predecessors of some colleges of the University of Birmingham. On March 24, 1900, Queen Victoria granted the Royal Charter to formally establish the University of Birmingham.
The school consists of the Faculty of Arts and Law, the Faculty of Medicine and Dental Sciences, the Faculty of Life and Environmental Sciences, the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences, and the Faculty of Social Sciences. As of 2023, the school offers 244 undergraduate majors. There are about 38,000 students and more than 8,000 staff. Among the teachers are members of the European Academy of Sciences, the British Academy of Sciences and the Royal Society of the United Kingdom. In addition, the school has more than 300,000 alumni, and its staff and alumni have won 9 Nobel Prizes, and have also produced 3 British prime ministers and 5 foreign heads of government.
In the 2024 Times Higher Education World University Rankings, the University of Birmingham is ranked 101st; 80th in the 2025 QS World University Rankings; 130th in the 2024 Complete University Guide; 122nd in the 2024 Guardian University Guide; and 121st in the 2024 Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide.
It has many advantageous disciplines. For example, in the 2021 QS World University Subject Rankings, sports-related disciplines ranked 3rd in the UK and 12th in the world; dentistry ranked 4th in the UK and 20th in the world; theology, theology and religious studies ranked 6th in the UK and 27th in the world; social policy and administration ranked 8th in the UK and 45th in the world.
