The University of York is a research university located in York, England, United Kingdom. It is a member of the famous Russell Group of British research universities, as well as the N8 University Alliance, the White Rose University Alliance, the World University Alliance, the Plate Glass University, and the Jiangsu-UK High Level University Alliance. The University of York drafted a petition to establish a university in 1617, but it was not approved until 1960. In October 1963, the university officially opened with Heslington Hall and King's Manor as the main venues, and enrolled 230 students and 28 faculty members for the first time. Under the leadership of the first vice-chancellor Baron James, the university developed and built according to plan.
