Cuttington University is a private university located in Suakoko, Bong State, Liberia. It is the oldest private coeducational four-year degree-granting institution in sub-Saharan Africa and is associated with the Episcopal Church of the United States.

History

In 1887, Robert Fulton Cuttington, treasurer of the Episcopal Church of the United States, donated $5,000 to an Episcopal bishop in Liberia to establish a school to teach Liberian children industrial and agricultural knowledge.

In 1889, Samuel David Ferguson officially established Caton College in Cape Palmas.

In 1948, the college moved to Suakoko, Bong State.

During the First Liberian Civil War from 1989 to 1996, the school was looted, the buildings were damaged, and the campus was used as a militia training facility.

In 1998, Caton University College reopened and welcomed 103 students.

On August 15, 2004, 117 students graduated from the war-torn campus, with the largest number of graduates in nursing.
