Introduction

The University of Mines and Technology is a public university located in Tarkwa, Western Province, Ghana. It focuses on higher education in mining, technology and related sciences. It is the only university in West Africa that specializes in training engineers for the mining industry.

History and establishment time

Establishment time: Its predecessor was Tarkwa Technical Institute, which was established on November 3, 1952, and was officially entrusted by the Ghanaian government on October 7, 1953.

Transformation and development: In 1961, under the advocacy of the Ghana Mining Association, the government redefined the mission of the institute and included the training of mining technicians and other middle-level manpower for the country's mining industry and related industries. In 2001, the Ghanaian government upgraded it to a university and renamed it the Ghana University of Mines and Technology.
