The London School of Economics and Political Science is a public research university located in London, England. It is a member of the Federal University of London, the Russell Group and the European Social Science University Association. It is known as one of the top five universities in the UK together with Oxford University, Cambridge University, Imperial College London and University College London.
In 1895, Fabian Society members Sidney Webb, Beatrice Webb, Graham Wallas and George Bernard Shaw co-founded the London School of Economics and Political Science. In 1900, the school joined the University of London and awarded degrees from the University of London. In 1939, the school was affected by the Second World War and moved to Peterhouse, and moved back to Houghton Street in London in 1945. In 2006, the London School of Economics and Political Science obtained its own degree-awarding authority and awarded degrees for the first time in 2008. It has been recognized by the UK's 2021 Research Excellence Assessment Framework. The school ranks 50th in the world in the 2024 QS World University Rankings. As of June 2024, the school has been included in the Complete University Guide for 12 consecutive years, and 18 staff and alumni have won Nobel Prizes.
As of June 2024, the London School of Economics and Political Science has a total of 24 buildings for teaching and research, including the Central Building and the Zheng Jianku Building, 17 living buildings and a Berryland Sports Field; the school has a total of 29 departments, 21 research centers, 41 departmental research units, interdepartmental research units and certification groups; 42 undergraduate majors and 215 postgraduate degrees. The school's social sciences and management ranked 6th in the world in the 2024 QS World University Subject Rankings.
