The University of Leeds is a public research university located in Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. It ranks 82nd in the world in the QS World University Rankings. It is a member of the Russell Group of universities, and is also a member of the World University Alliance, the International University Climate Alliance, the Association of Commonwealth Universities, RENKEI, the British University Alliance, the N8 University Alliance, the White Rose University Alliance, the China-Europe Business School Alliance, and the China-UK University Engineering Education and Research Alliance. The University of Leeds was founded in 1904. Its predecessor was the Leeds Medical School founded in 1831 and the Yorkshire Institute of Technology founded in 1874. In 1877, the Yorkshire Institute of Technology was renamed Yorkshire College. In 1884, Yorkshire College merged with the Leeds Medical School. In 1887, the Manchester and Liverpool campuses of Owens College joined to form the federal Victoria University. Soon after, Manchester and Liverpool were established independently, and the University of Leeds was also established independently in 1904, and Edward VII granted the University of Leeds an independent university charter. After the establishment of the University of Leeds, the number of students grew rapidly.
