The University of Sussex, is located near Brighton in southern England. It is a world-leading research-intensive university, a comprehensive research university, and the first "flat glass university" established in the new wave of universities in the UK in the 1960s. In June 1958, the government approved a plan to establish a university in Brighton. In 1959, Basil Spencer was commissioned to plan and design a campus on a 94-hectare rural site about 4 miles from Brighton. On August 16, 1961, the University of Sussex received a royal charter and was officially established. In the same year, the first batch of 52 students enrolled. In the history of the school, there are many important events: in 1963, the physics, art and library buildings were completed; in 1964, the first edition of the student union newspaper, The Wine Press, was printed, the first graduation ceremony was held in the same year, and Queen Elizabeth II opened the library; in 1966, the Science Policy Research Unit and the Institute of Development Studies were established on campus; in 1969, the UK's first campus-based Gardner Creative Arts Center was established; in 1971, Basil Spencer's design studio won a number of prestigious awards; in 1984, the university offered the first minor in management; in 1993, Falmer House and Conference Hall designed by Basil Spencer were awarded listed building status; in 1996, the Sussex Innovation Center opened; in 2001, Brighton and Sussex Medical School was established, Sussex became the first university in the UK to hold a Holocaust Remembrance Day event, and in the same year became the second university to switch to 100% "green" electricity; in 2011, the business school MBA course was launched; in 2012 In 2015, the Jubilee Building opened; in 2016, plans to rebuild East Slope Accommodation were approved, the Gardner Arts Centre was reopened after renovation and renamed the Attenborough Centre for Creative Arts, and the following year 3,000 solar panels were put into use in Sussex; in 2018, the Business School opened the Bloomberg Lab and launched its first online master's program, and the following year the Business School received EQUis and AMBA accreditation; in 2021, work on the development of new student accommodation and facilities on the Falmer campus started; in 2022, the first female vice-president, Professor Sasha Rosenier, was appointed, and the new student center on campus opened in the same year.
